Background info: After obtaining a degree in Fire Science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Nicholas went to California and joined the Los Angeles County Fire Department where he got into helitack operations. Later, when requested by his battalion chief to join a contract department based in Santa Barbra, Nicholas took a leave of absence and joined this contract department where he started a hellcack unit to lighten the load on Cal Fire and the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Nicholas then was promoted to captain in this contract department when it became a national response unit and a Type I interagency helitack crew and Engine crews. Nicholas then retired from the Los Angeles County Department and began recruiting other firefighters that he knew from across California. He met a female Lieutenant in Cal Fire named Hailey and they eventually married and she joined the crew as the second in command of Air 7, the S-70 and the helitack crew mainly used by the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise.
